The most serious problem of modern time is that man is destroying the earth’s natural resources and transforming huge areas into waste land. As a result, it is becoming extremely difficult to grow enough food to feed. Another problem is the air pollution which is a cause of ill-health in human beings. In a lot of countries there are laws limiting the amount of smoke which factories can produce. Although there isn’t enough information on the effects of smoke in the atmosphere, doctors have proved that the air pollution cause lung disease.

Environmental pollution is a term that refers to all the ways by which man pollutes his surroundings. Man dirties the air with gases and smokes, poisons the water with chemicals and other substances, and damages the soil with too many fertilizers and pesticides. Man also pollutes his surroundings in various other ways. For example, people ruin natural beauty by scattering junk and litter on the land and in the water. They operate machines and motor vehicles that fill the air with disturbing noise.
Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems facing mankind today. Air, water, and soil are necessary to the survival of all living things. Badly polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. Pollution of soil reduces the amount of land that is available for growing food. Environmental pollution also brings ugliness to man’s naturally beautiful world.
Gases and smokes make the air polluted.
Man doesn’t damage the soil with too many fertilizers and pesticides.
Environmental pollution isn’t one of the most serious problems facing mankind today.
Polluted air can affect people’s health.
Last week, our class had a discussion on how to protect the environment and we came up with some interesting, practical suggestions. Some students suggested using banana leaves to wrap food in order to save paper. Another idea is to reuse and recycle bottles and cans so that we can reduce garbage and save our natural resources. Some other students decided to go to school by bike to save energy and keep the air clean. But another group gave a better idea when they suggested with all the opinions, but he also added that things were easier said that than done, and that we had to do a lot to make our suggestions become reality.

III. Read the passage and choose True (T) or False (F)
A. Everyday, in homes all over the world, people waste huge amounts of energy and water. Hong Kong is estimated to waste about $5 billion worth of energy a year. This is wasted through bad habits, for example leaving lights, air conditioners and televisions on when no one is in the room. Wasting water by using too much, or not fixing dripping tabs, also contribute to the problem.

Most people do not realize that saving energy in the home will actually save their money. If people use less energy, their water, gas and electricity bills become lower. Most of the ways in which we can decrease energy consumption in the home is very simple. The most obvious one is to turn off things when they are not in use. T F
1. People don’t save enormous energy throughout the world.
2. The poor daily routine doesn’t cause the waste of energy.
3. What we do to decrease energy consumption isn’t complicated.
4. We should switch off electrical appliances when unnecessary.
B. Many people still believe that natural resources will never be used up. Actually, the world’s energy resources are limited. Nobody knows exactly how much fuel is left. However, we also should use them economically and try to find out alternative sources of power. According to Professor Marvin Burnham of the New England Institute of Technology, we have to start conserving coal, oil and gas before it is too late; and nuclear power is the only alternative. However, many people do not approve of using nuclear power because it’s very dangerous. What would happen if there were a serious nuclear accident? Radioactivity causes cancer and may badly affect the future generations. Solar energy may be the suitable
solution. T F

 1. Natural resources will never run out.
 2. We don’t know exactly how much fuel is left.
 3. Many people agree to use nuclear power as an alternative energy.
 4. Solar energy can be used as a substitute for sources of power.
C. About twenty per cent of the world’s present energy already comes from the sun in one form or another. Special devices have already been made available to place on the roofs of houses and flats to collect the sun’s rays and thus heat water. Thousands of these devices are now being used to provide power in homes throughout the United States while more than a million solar water- heating units have already been installed in homes in Japan. Other purposes for which solar energy is at present being used include the separation of salt from seawater, irrigation and sewage disposal.
For most people in developing countries, the need is not for air conditioners or central heating but for cheap methods of cooking food, drying crops and lighting homes.
 1. One - fifth of the world’s energy nowadays isn’t the solar energy. T F

 2. Special devices are put on the roofs of houses only to cook food and light homes.
 3. Japanese people use fewer solar devices than people in the USA.
 4. People need cheap ways of cooking food, drying crops and lighting homes.
IV. Fill in the blank with one suitable word.
